Following on from the recent post about mishearing lyrics (Mondegreens) , I stumbled over the related phenomenon of Soramimi – mishearing across language barrier.
Surely the only explanation for the popularity in the former USSR of the otherwise execrable Smokie is that their ditty, “What can I do?” has a line that sounds to Russian ears like:
“Vodku naidu (Водку найду) = “I shall find some vodka”.
Yessireebob, copying is good. Smokie less so (are there really 3 CDs of the best of…?)
